Yes, I have insomnia, this is what happens when you staff a 24-hour convention.
Anyway, this past weekend I ran this panel at Anime Punch for the first time, and it went very well. Even though this is quite the morbid topic for conversation, it's really thought provoking for the audience and *gasp* can be entertaining. This isn't just talking about character's that die, this is digging deeper, going into the archetypes and tropes directors and writers use to execute characters and the reasons for their use. It also includes the significance of these deaths, both in anime and on the viewer watching at home. Since some of this is subjective, audience discussion is highly encouraged. Spoilers are obvious, but I managed to keep them to a few mainstream series that most anime fans have seen this time.
So, I'm posting this here as an interest pitch, is there anyone that would be willing to come to a panel on this?

That's part of it, yes. If it's related to death, it's pretty much fair game. For example, character views on mortality are also included.

Interesting. If it happens I might just sit it on it because this intrigues me.

I would go, seeing as it is all of my favorite characters die, sometimes their deaths contribute to the series quite a bit. In a sense, meeting Haku in Naruto was a changing point in Naruto's life. He matured (even if only a little) from that time and ...i can't think of how to explain it lol.
I'll save some of my comments for the panel...if that happens xD....

Tayuya, you can't forget about Saya's little brother getting wacked by her sister. That had a real strong effect on the family. As did her dad. Their name's escape me at the moment but you know who I'm talking about.

Could we kind of keep spoilers out of the thread, I'd like to keep the massive groans limited to the room where I can physically hear them.
That said, to give you an idea of how the panel runs, a bit over half of it is spent on the tropes and archetypes used, because they're persistent. I can grab an anime series out of the blue and relate it to one of them. The rest of it depends entirely on what the audience feels like doing. Conclusion is done entirely by me, because right now I've got a pretty poignant closer.

Sounds good. Would like to know what tropes are and what archetypes how diffrent characters getting killed would be.

A trope is a conceptual figure of speech. It's an idea that is pervasive in written and visual work. It is not a cliche, cliche's are trite and unimportant, instead, tropes are literally the building blocks of writing.
An example of a trope is the Karmic Death. This is where a villain is killed, not by the hero, but by some other means. It's usually by his own hands (a plan gone awry), but may occasionally be carried out by another person. The point is to emphasize the hero's innocence. The hero doesn't shed blood, the plot does it for him.
That's just one of many building blocks. The resource that I both use and edit myself, is TVTropes.org/ .

So a Karmic Death would be like M.Bison at the end of the crappy Street Fighter movie with Raul Julia? Correct?

Being the Human Psychology nerd I am. . . this is a nice and original idea for a panel. :3 I would definatly come!
And if you do decide to go through with it and need help, my hand is raised high.

So a Karmic Death would be like M.Bison at the end of the crappy Street Fighter movie with Raul Julia? Correct? No, because Guile clearly kicked him into the monitors, and he was also clearly the hero. A good (and bloody) example of this is in Bioshock. Big Daddies are imprinted to protect their Little Sisters at all costs. One of the villains slaps a Little Sister. When you come across that area in the game, he's been impaled on his own desk by a Big Daddy. Same end result you probably would have given him, but without any consequences whatsoever.

I would go. I went to ASTL last year and didn't find anything overly interesting. But this is something people can really think about and actually have a real discussion about. I like it~ If this is at ASTL, You can definitely count on seeing me there. XD!

yes, i think this would be awesome. i'm totally with Tayuya there. that's why i try not to say who my favorites are. even though it could be a sad-fest, i think it would be full of some intelectual discussion.
