That is intriguing. It brings up the question of the destruction of human-kind. Do you believe that scientists are trying to find another Earth in order to evacuate the current Earth from impending doom?

Nah, if they were planning on dumping this rock they would work on Interstellar Space craft and Manned colonies on the moon and Mars.

Think about it; why would they make colonies on the moon and Mars when they cannot support life? They think they've found a planet that they that is identical to the Earth. If their theories are correct then they will have a planet to fall back on if this world is impending destruction.
Of course they will have to colonize it prior to inhabiting it, make sure it is OK for everyone else to live on.

And they need to know if we can do self sufficient colonies first. And what better place then the moon and Mars.

Just to make colonies on the Moon and Mars would need a pseudo atmosphere which would take billions of dollars to make and probably not survive in space.

Nah, they're looking for Earth like planets to find aliens.
And we would need self-sustaining colonies tested in inhospitable environments because interstellar travel within the span of a human life is nigh impossible right now, thus we need to have colony ships capable of a multi-generational voyage.

If we are going to have Generation Ships, then we need to work on Artificial Gravity. With out that then you got a lot of problems.

This is reality, not an anime people. We are years away from being to able to build the technology as described in animes/ mangas.

yes, but we would need this technology to travel to an earth-like planet in order to colonize it. Therefore I must conclude that they are not looking for earth-like planets for the purpose of having a backup planet should this one be destroyed.

It's inevitable that this Earth will be destroyed or there will be a mess extinction (ie the Dinosaurs). So wouldn't it be probable that Nasa has a backup plan in mind?

I feel like what these scientists are doing is simply trying to find life on other planets. I'm sure there are other scientists trying to find another habitable planet for when the earth's destruction does happen, but as said previously, they need to come up with something to get us there as well. It would do us no good to know of a back-up planet when we can't even get to it

Yeah, our physics are so far off from being able to get to a habitable planet that there really is no point in searching for a replacement here. They're looking for extra-terrestrial life, because that's the big sexy thing in astronomy.

I do believe is extra-terrestrial life but what do you think will happen if we do find them?

People will freak. I doubt we will ever actually find extra-terrestrial life in the sense of actual physical contact, though. We might someday pick up radio waves or something like that, but if there are aliens out there, the feat of interstellar travel would be so great I doubt we will meet them anytime soon.
