Trying to make Death's Scythe for Dante's Inferno game cosplay. I can make the costume and armor just fine but the blade of the scythe will be hard! I already have a suitable staff (old broom w/out bristles), but need to attach the blade somehow. If Grimmjow-Cid or Link could help out a bit on this one that would be amazing!

^^; I'm not Cid or Link, but as someone who's made a scythe before I can try! What are you making the blade out of?

Kadaj is pretty good at props too, she made the huge Sitar and Faust's Sycthe perfectly. :3

Whoever can help! I don't know what I'm going to make it out of, just that the staff will be from a broom. What do you all suggest for the blade? Ive heard of foams and plasters but I dont really know what is best. I usually make everything out of cardboard and epoxy. Any ideas are welcome!

I would make the scythe blade out of thin wood just in case someone bumps into it (as plaster & foam can break easily when it's blade-thin). Not plywood though because the acids in it will eat through the paint. For my Faust scythe I used small screws to attach it then covered the screw holes with plaster and painted over it. If you're doing all of the details on the scythe top it should be easy to hide where the screws were. For the details though I would carve them out of insulation foam then coat it in lacquer (all of this is available at home depot) so it's semi-hard & won't get destroyed at conventions. For the blade paint to make it metallic they usually sell metallic looking paint at craft stores.
83 Cid is the foam master, so you might want to ask him if there's an easier foam to use (unless you buy a hotwire, it makes carving foam really easy) for the details than the insulation foam I use. Link's wood props are amazing so if you plan on using different wood for the blade I'd ask him on what kind to use or how to carve out the details on the blade if you don't want to use foam on it.
^^; Sorry for the rambling post.

Thanks a lot! You always give good advice. Those suggestions all seem pretty good. I dont know what wood to make the scythe out of but I just got a few more detailed pictures of the costume today. I will look into the insulation foam thing, I need to use that for the details on the top of the scythe. (always wondered about how to harden the foam after you're done, so thanks) I'll post more detailed pics of what Im trying to make later.
The rest of the costume i can pull together quite well like I did for the Spartan cosplay. I'm just glad there's no shield to carry around all the time for this one.

wow i'm lat to the party! but if you still need help i'm at your service my friend ^_^, and thank you for you support Kadaj *hugs* My thoughts are YES to thin wood or to keep it light Plastic from "Lowes" there is a project in the making as we speek for my new cosplay in which i'm going to use a combo of Plastic and wood. as for the wood type i find Oak, and Ceder the strongist the down fall that it will be a little on the hevy side. Using a wooden tip and a plastic blade could strenghtin and give it the AWESOMENESS look you want.

^^ Thank you Spartan! Also, make sure the wood you buy isn't warped (curved funny). You should also start working on the blade part of it within a day or so of buying the wood, because it could warp after you buy it. (This happened for my Faust scythe, I left the blade wood in my basement for too long before I worked on it and it warped. Then I had to toss half of it! @_@ Epoxy glue works great for gluing on details, but don't get it on your hands as it can pull off skin. ( ; This hasn't happened to me, but I've heard it can!) *hugs Link back* ^_^ Super Prop Making Advice Team Go!

Ya epoxy is nasty stuff but works wonders. Perfect for strengthening. Finished half of the armor in one day! I'm pretty fast at this now. I'll post pics of the scythe later

Ok, armor is coming along amazing, would u believe material from 3 ring binders make the best bendable armor? lol, anyway i found this plastic poster im gonna use for the scythe blade. Basically its made like corrugated cardboard but its plastic. Its strong enough and only bends under pressure. So I'll double it up and see if it holds and to cut down on weight of the scythe.
