Possible cosplays that I may need some advice with

Ok, sooo...
normally, I make my own cosplays with the help of my mom, and the past few years, it hasn't been too much of a problem and they've turned out nicely. But as time goes on, I'm starting to want to do more complicated cosplays. My mom can only sew with the help of patterns, and since I learned how to sew from her, that's also the only way I can sew.
Some of the cosplays I would like to try out this year are ones that would require the knowledge of how to sew without the help of a pattern... and by that, I'm talking about the tangible ones, and not the ones that you can look at online to get an idea of what to do. We tried that and it didn't work out all that well ^^;; Then again, I'm a bit of a perfectionist and I like my cosplays to look really good and close to exactly how it is in the reference picture.

Now that I'm done with that... here is the one cosplay that I have in mind that I would need help with:

it's a class called a Dervish from Guild Wars.
Along with this cosplay, I would probably have a scythe for a weapon, but I would have someone else make that because I know that I wouldn't be able to >_>

Lol. Yes, there's a new one coming out, but probably not until 2010 or 2011, which makes me very sad.

My mom is all excited about making it and we both agree that it would look pretty B.A.
Problems:
The bone--- my mom and I would like to try to make it ourselves to save money and so I have these questions:

• If we make it out of wood, what kind should we use that would be easy on the wallet but good quality?
  
• How should we go about making it? (What tools would we need, etc?)
  

The leather (or what I assume to be leather[the brown areas])---

• What are some fabrics that act like leather, but are cheaper and easier to use?
  
• If not that alternate material, then what else could we do?
