What are the regulations for weapon props? Are wooden weapon props allowed?

This is from 2008, but I am almost positive this rule still stands since there are those who make wooden props every year. Real swords are not allowed. I do not know any convention that DOES allow real swords. Wooden swords, foam swords and anything not made of metal is allowed. Not sure if you would need this, but this is the con chair's response about airsoft type and/or prop guns. Yo! We generally require an orange tip be on the gun to affirm that it is fake. If it is made from Airsoft or other firing guns, you cannot carry ammunition or have it loaded at any given time. Those are the two main rules we have on firearm props. Thank you!

A word of advice; if you have to spraypaint a nerf gun, be sure to leave the tip orange! I spraypainted my nerf gun for my machina, but I left the tip orange just in case and everything went right.

What about for guns that are built entirely out of foam? Should they still have an orange tip?

What about for guns that are built entirely out of foam? Should they still have an orange tip? As far as I've noticed, as long as they can tell it's not a real gun, then it's okay if it doesn't have an orange tip to it. I've made several guns, before, and my friend made a pair that looked very real (but they were carved styrofoam with wall plaster over them. We've never even been asked to see them. So, if you gun is all foam and no hard outside casing, then I would think you are fine (as long as whatever type of ammunition that loads into it is not with you). The airsoft guns need to have their orange tip because their bodies are hard plastic and tend to be modeled after real guns. So, to prevent confusion with the real things, they ask cosplayers to not paint over that as it's the fastest and most effective means of telling a "fake" gun from a real one.

Feel free to bring a few WIP pics of you making it if they question it. I mean, it's not always foolproof, but it can work if they have a difficult time seeing it's not real.
