Ok, so my boyfriend is an anime virgin, but really wants to be involved with anime like I am. (He thinks cosplaying is cool, but doesn’t really understand it.) But I’m afraid that if I start him off with the wrong anime he won’t like it. So I need some good animes but they need a few things.
1. Action (duh) 2. Mystery 3. Epic battles/ quests 4. Some blood would be nice 5. And more on the fantasy side, than based on real life.
Now here are some of MY requests,
No Inuyasha, No Naruto, More Or less no main stream Animes.
I was thinking along the lines of like Cowboy Bebop. Do you think might be a good starter one??? (Yes I know it was main stream)
But in a nutshell, what do you guys think?

Evangelion? Well, I guess that's kind of realistic... for Mystery genre... I can really only think of Meitantei Conan which lacks really epical battle scenes and it's more or less realistic... ...
With your filter of requirements, it's a bit hard to determine what's appropriate. xD;

I think Cowboy Bebop is a good anime to start off with I love it! Other ones I can recommend somewhere along those lines(it at least touches a few of the requirements) are Trigun, Gundam Wing, and Rurouni Kenshin(although for this if you are going for blood go for Samurai X, I personally liked it better anyway) I know those are all pretty mainstream but I don't think they are too mainstream. Hope that helps!

Under no circumstances should you ever start anyone out on Evangelion, it's far too much of a disjointed mindscrew. >_<
I'd say start him off with either Cowboy Bebop of Full Metal Alchemist. Both of them pretty well fit the bill, though FMA less on the actiony side. That's what we've pretty much started everyone around here on.

Darker than Black! Just ask Daniel, he'd say the same thing. It's a very good series, and fits in pretty much all the things you listed.

Yu Yu Hakusho? It used to be a mainstream, but they don't show it anymore. Outlaw Star? Saiyuki?

Trigun! And Cowboy Bebop. Both are excellent starter animes for action series.

Yu Yu Hakusho would be good for him... One Piece is good for humor and epic fight value (assuming it's the japanese version). He would probably like Love Hina or Elfin Lied too, and of course DBZ. For mystery and overall awesomeness though, show him Death Note. Even non-anime fans love it

Yu Yu Hakusho is a great starter anime. There's some blood, tons fo violence, plenty of comedy and lots of memorable characrters and msot of all, one of the BEST anime plot lines!
Was my first anime and it got me into other anime. I didn't even like cartoons when I got into it, I jsut started watching it and immediatly fell in love with anime!
Most anime fans I've met started watching cartoons until cartoon network started airing anime. YYH being one of the first they aired!

Black Lagoon is a good action-y anime to watch, although later in the series it gets a little darker.

Trigun and Cowboybebop two of my first animes, two I really loved. Anything really new to the anime scene I can't say I've been pretty out of touch for awhile. But maybe instead of starting a series, you can start with a movie, Akira, Ghost in the shell, etc., then stem off into a series. A series might be a bit much to someone who's super new. Also I agree with not starting off with Evangelion.

I also agree that a movie would probably be best to start with, or an anime series that doesn't have a whole lot of episodes. I remember my friends got me into anime through Inuyasha. As many people have said above, I'd suggest Trigun, since I really liked it myself.
