So I got some more clay for Christmas and decided to remodel the helmet. Now it looks exactly the way I want it to. I did a little more research on making molds and props. So Im trying a flexible mold on the helmet and then an outer mold of plaster. For the flexible mold I used a silicone caulk.

Popped the plaster mother mold off the silicone. Unfortunately the first place I barely tugged on the silicone ripped. I taped the 2 halves of the plaster together and slipped the silicone inside. The split is just barely open. I should be able to make it work. Im thinking that if I lay the resin over the split first and let it set, that I should be able to do the rest of the helmet. Im really wanting this helmet to be one solid piece. Hopefully it works.

Once I got the silicone inside the plaster mold I had no problem with the rip in it. What Im doing to make the helmet is just using fiberglass resin without the cloth. That way I dont have to worry about those nasty little strings sticking out and poking me. The way Im doing it is called rotocasting. Im mixing up the resin and hardener, dumping it in the mold and rotating it around to get an even coverage. Graps every detail perfectly.

And there it is folks! Turned out a lot nicer than the previous fiberglass cloth one. Unfortunately I had to cut it in half cause my head would only slide half way into it. Gonna need some sanding though. I cant afford to buy a really good rubber for the mold. But its not too shabby for the silicone caulk. Baka Ninja Cosplay

Baka Ninja CosplayIm sure a lot of you are going "Dude work on something other than the helmet. I wanna see the rest of it". Well to be honest Ive never done anything like this before. Aside from the Edward Elric automail I made in 2011, Ive never made costume armor of this magnitude. Sadly, Im a perfectionist when it comes to making things, especially cosplays. I want this to look like its made by somebody who has been making these things for a long time. So a lot of experimenting is going into this. Im trying to find the best way that I can make this mecha suit look exactly the way I want. With the helmet being the hardest, most detailed part I have one final experiment on how to make it. Im going to try doing it with EVA foam, aka the foam puzzle piece mats you put on your floor. Its a lot cheaper, less time consuming, not hard as a rock, and I can get all the materials locally.

Baka Ninja CosplayI think Im going to give up on my Gurren Lagann cosplay. As epic as it would be I just cant find a reasonable affordable way to make it look the way I want. Trying to make a 3D model of it would take a LOT of practice, and Ill get annoyed with modeling it long before it looks perfect. So I think I take what Ive learned to make props and go as Kirito from Sword Art Online. I love his swords in his first avatar so Ill probably do that. Sorry to disappoint all of you who may have been looking forward to this cosplay. The good part about all this experimenting is I learned a few ways to make new things like props and what not.
